What African Tech Employees Really Want: Insights from Founders

Africa should provide attractive packages that will help retain and develop employees in the industry.  In a recent tech seminar held by Codetrain Africa, founders and owners of technology companies urge to create a flexible work environment to enable staff to deliver at their optimum.

These were the conclusions of a panel discussion that took place in Accra as part of the Codetrain Africa Tech Career Seminar.

The deliberation was on how to help companies draw in the greatest personnel as well as how job seekers might land their ideal positions in national and international tech companies.

Training/Graduating participants were joined by tech enthusiasts, industry experts, and entrepreneurs for an amazing networking and knowledge-sharing. These prominent figures included Mr Kelvin Nyame, (CEO of Meqasa Ltd), Mr Kena Amoah, (CEO of MITA), Mr Ishaq Abubakar, (CEO of Gitcall Limited), and Mr Selasie Anani, (CTO of mPharma).

In his advice to job seekers in the technology sector, Mr. Ishaq Abubakar emphasised the need of having a strong portfolio and stated that “lack of experience is no longer an excuse in the industry.”

You can see a glimpse of your abilities in your portfolio. Don’t wait until you graduate to start constructing a portfolio; you should start doing so while you are still in school, ”he said”.

Mr. Ishaq Abubakar also pointed out that technology company owners need to view their employees as partners in their businesses rather than just workers.

“The company culture should instill in the employee the belief that, this is my business, and it will continue to operate even if I am not there.”

However, Mr. Anani thought that companies considered more than just a candidate’s aptitude for deciphering computer codes.

He stated that effective communication was crucial.

Additionally, Mr. Kelvin Nyame stressed the significance of creating an environment at work that would encourage employees to make moral judgements and maintain their motivation.
