Tigo (www.Tigo.co.tz), a digital lifestyle telecommunications company in Tanzania and a member of the Axian Telecom Group, was named the Fastest Mobile Network in Tanzania and won the coveted Ookla® Speedtest AwardTM in 2023, which is now behind us.
Tigo won the much-coveted award in light of the company’s significant national investment in network upgrading and enhancement.
The chief executive officer of Tigo, Kamal Okba, expressed his excitement and joy at receiving the highly coveted honour. Tigo’s significant investments in network renovation, new site rollout, and technology upgrading are clearly paying off, as seen by the Ookla award.
In order to upgrade and modernise its network infrastructure, Tigo committed to investing over TZS 1 trillion within five years starting in 2022. This investment has greatly improved the telecom company’s customers’ digital experiences, which has led to Tigo receiving recognition both locally and internationally, including the most recent Ookla Speed test award.
After making significant investments in network upgrades, Tigo was recognised with the Ookla Award for “network quality and reliability.” Okba emphasised this point, saying, “We are currently executing an extensive modernization project to offer state-of-the-art and best in class technology in every site, including rural areas across Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar to improve experience, competitiveness, and accelerate transformation of the digital economy.”
Due to Tigo’s massive investment, Tanzania is now home to the fastest (5Gbps) 5G technology. Additionally, all sites throughout Zanzibar and the Tanzanian mainland have been upgraded to 4G technology.
According to Stephen Bye, President and CEO of Ookla, a Ziff Davis company, “Tigo has been named the Fastest Mobile Network in Tanzania by Ookla’s Speedtest Awards after conducting an in-depth analysis of consumer-initiated tests taken with Speedtest.”
