Ericsson and MTN Group have unveiled a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a mission to propel sustainability, digital skills, and education initiatives throughout Africa. This significant announcement took place at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, in 2024.

Ericsson and MTN Group have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance sustainability initiatives in accordance with the principles of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17. This collaboration leverages the extensive experience and resources of both companies within the telecommunications sector to drive digital solutions for Africa’s advancement.

The partnership is aligned with Ericsson’s Net Zero aspirations and MTN’s Road to Zero commitment as part of its Ambition 2025 strategy. Together, the companies will explore opportunities to develop and promote innovative Information and Communications Technology (ICT) solutions for decarbonizing their value chain ecosystem, fostering sustainable practices, and contributing to achieving their Net Zero goals. This effort supports the UN SDG 17 target of promoting sustainable technologies to developing countries by facilitating the development, transfer, dissemination, and diffusion of environmentally sound technologies on favorable terms.

Driving Sustainable Development and Empowering Communities Through Partnership

Ericsson will contribute its industry-leading and sustainable products and solutions aimed at optimizing network efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and minimizing network waste.

Furthermore, Ericsson and MTN Group will harness their expertise in skills development through initiatives such as Ericsson’s Connect to Learn program and the MTN Skills Academy to enhance digital and ICT skills, thereby improving competitiveness and employability.

Nompilo Morafo, Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer at MTN, emphasizes, “Sustainability is at the core of MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy. This partnership with Ericsson reaffirms our commitment to driving meaningful change. By adopting a collaborative approach, we will create a positive impact on the environment, empower communities through digital skills development, and contribute to a more sustainable Africa.”

Fida Kibbi, Vice President and Head of Marketing, Communications, Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility at Ericsson Middle East and Africa, expresses excitement about the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to partner with MTN Group on their ambitious journey towards Net Zero and digital inclusion. The Memorandum of Understanding underscores our long-standing partnership and builds upon our shared commitment to creating a more sustainable future.
