Apple Enhances Multilingual Accessibility Across iOS 18 Lock Screen, Keyboard, and Search Functions

At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) last month, Apple revealed iOS 18. Since then, iOS 18’s lock screen, Siri, keyboard, and search have extended support for many more languages thanks to two developer betas that the company has released in recent weeks.

The latest version allows you to personalize the lock screen to display the time in twelve different languages, including Arabic, Arabic Indic, Bangla, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Kannada, Malayalam, Meitei, Odia, Ol Chiki, Telugu, and Gujarati.

Many changes to the iOS keyboard are made, one of which is the system-wide support for trilingual predictive typing. Additional language scripts are visible to the left and right of the suggestion area, and you can quickly switch between them. Additionally, you can type in Latin text and automatically receive suggestions in all three languages without having to move between them.

The keyboard in the Messages app remembers the last language you used for a specific thread if you have numerous threads open in different languages. Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu are among the languages supported by the trilingual keyboard. Moreover, iOS 18 now supports a multiscript keyboard in both English and Korean, according to the company.

Users can now search for alternative spellings of words that sound similar in that language using iOS 18’s enhanced language search feature. In Hindi, for example, they can look up both “चंद्र” and “चन्द्र.” Gujarati, Devanagari, Bangla, and Assamese are among the languages that may be searched using the new tool.

With iOS 18, there are also other language-related enhancements such as the following:

The business now offers live Indian English voicemail transcription help.
Hindi is now supported by the iOS 18 translate application.
Arabic is now supported by the live text function.
An improved grammar engine for Korean and Hindi.
Indian script and numerals can be used to make contact posters.
This autumn, Apple will make iOS 18 available to all customers. The features listed above will be accessible in iOS 18 beta versions; however, they may not be fully functional, so you might not want to install them on your main device.
