Edge Computing

The Edge Computing trend is a novel computing model encompassing various networks near the user. This concept involves facilitating large-scale data processing. 

According to Grand View Research, its market size has CAGR of 37.9% until 2030. This percentage will add over $150 billion to its revenue. The projected numbers are significantly high in just a span of 7 years from now. 

This tech trend has been in people’s lives since then, continuously improving. To give you some idea of what Edge Computing is, here are some examples:

  • Device Edge – One of the most traditional forms of edge computing is the Device Edge. This equipment can transmit information between the network and the cloud. Examples are routers, firewalls, etc.
  • Cloud Gaming – This trend is a new type of gaming that streams games live feeds directly to the device. Usually, the game can process itself while the host is in data centers. 
  • Sensor Edge – The Sensor Edge technology enables organizations to process their analytics to the endpoints to maximize performance. Its computations are less complex because endpoints are all minimal hardware. 

These are some of the pros and cons that Edge Computing can bring to humanity:

Pros

Better time management –  Businesses see time management as one of the best Edge Computing advantages. This trend can enhance network velocity, which results in financial gain.

Lesser risk – Edge Computing can send only certain data to the cloud to minimize hacking. Even if cybercriminals try to hack, they cannot access all users’ details.

Lower transmission cost – This trend can reduce transmission costs because of its lower bandwidth. Edge computing does not require all data to be processed in the data centres. 

Cons

Limited processing power – Edge technologies often have limited computing capabilities. This limitation can result in the restriction of complex tasks or the ability to handle large data sets efficiently. 

More complex maintenance – This trend is a distributed network of devices. The distribution makes task management more challenging and complicated. 

Dependency on connectivity – Edge devices can rely heavily on network connection. Network disruptions can affect its operation.
