NEW! The USB-A Port to be in M4 Mac Mini

Mac mini is at the center of Apple’s upcoming product releases, offering a clearer picture of the revamped design and new affordable keyboard. Thanks to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, we have detailed insights into these changes and their impact on Apple’s lineup.

A Fresh Look for the Mac Mini

Apple’s Mac mini will get its first major redesign since 2010, shrinking to about the size of an Apple TV with added height. This update reflects Apple’s strategy to simplify designs by removing old connectors and adding modern features.

The upcoming Mac mini will come in two versions: one featuring the base M4 chip and another with the more advanced M4 Pro. This dual offering will cater to both casual users and professionals who need extra processing power.

Design and Ports for the new Mac Mini

The new Mac mini is expected to resemble an iPad Pro encased in an aluminum shell, reflecting Apple’s commitment to sleek, minimalist aesthetics. Inside, the M4 Pro version will feature five USB-C ports—three positioned on the back and two on the front—similar to the setup seen in the Mac Studio. This layout should provide ample connectivity options for most users. Additionally, the M4 Pro model will retain its Ethernet port, HDMI connector, and headphone jack.

However, one notable change is the removal of USB-A ports. This shift indicates that Apple is pushing for more widespread adoption of USB-C across its devices, possibly setting the stage for similar transitions in other product lines like the Mac Pro and Mac Studio in the near future. The elimination of USB-A ports might be seen as a move towards future-proofing their hardware and encouraging users to embrace newer standards.

Shipping Timeline

According to Gurman, Apple plans to start shipping the standard M4 Mac mini units globally from China in early September. However, the M4 Pro version will not be available until October. This timeline suggests that the new Mac mini models will likely be unveiled at least a month after the anticipated September launch of the new iPhone, providing a clear separation between the two major product announcements.

Introducing a Budget-Friendly Keyboard

Alongside the Mac mini updates, Apple is also working on a new, budget-friendly Magic Keyboard. This new keyboard is aimed at providing an affordable option for users of entry-level iPads or the forthcoming iPad Air models. While it will forgo some of the premium features found in this year’s revamped Magic Keyboard—such as the metal palm rest and enhanced trackpad—it is expected to include some useful new features, possibly including a function row.

The release of this new keyboard is projected for mid-2025, aligning with Apple’s usual product release cycles. This budget keyboard will likely appeal to users who want a more cost-effective solution without compromising too much on functionality.

Insights from Inventory Trends

Gurman also sheds light on Apple’s product release patterns based on inventory trends. Typically, when stock levels of certain Apple products start to dwindle, it’s a strong indicator that new models are on the horizon. Currently, there are low stock levels for several Apple products, including the iPhone SE, various Apple Watch models, AirPods, and the iPad mini.

The reduced availability of these items suggests that Apple is preparing to roll out updated versions soon. In particular, new Apple Watches and AirPods are expected this fall, and the scarcity of the iPad mini could indicate that a new version is also in development.

Looking Ahead

As Apple continues to refine its product lineup, these updates to the Mac mini and the introduction of a new budget keyboard reflect broader trends in the company’s approach to design and functionality. By eliminating older ports and offering more affordable accessory options, Apple is positioning itself to meet the evolving needs of its user base while maintaining its commitment to innovation and quality.

With the Mac mini’s redesign and the new keyboard on the horizon, Apple enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to. Keep an eye out for further announcements as Apple prepares to unveil these exciting new products.
